Acoustic electric guitars are basically acoustics with built-in pickups. They can be played plugged in or not. When plugged in the guitar’s sound is amplified but still sounds like an acoustic. If the guitar is not plugged in it still has the same quality of sound as a normal acoustic guitar.

Before the acoustic electric guitar was created musicians would have to set up a microphone in front of an acoustic to amplify the sound, but the mic did not pick up the full spectrum of sound. This presented a problem to performers who did not want the sound of the traditional electric guitar, but needed more volume to perform.

The pickups on acoustic electric guitars are specially designed for use on an acoustic. These pickups are called piezoelectric pickups. Acoustic electric guitars usually will also have built-in pre-amplifier. The pre-amp has settings for treble; middle, bass, and volume- some even have a built-in digital tuner. The pre-amp is necessary to boost the signal of the pickup before it is emitted from guitar amp.
