Electric bass guitars

Electric bass guitarsElectric bass guitars have been ubiquitous in pop music since they were first invented in the 1930’s. These instruments were much easier to transport than the traditional double bass that was used previous to the electric version. And because they were amplified, they were easier to hear over the rest of the band.

As rock n’ roll developed in the 1950’s, electric bass guitars became the preferred instrument for bassists. The roar of electric guitars and drums necessitated the need for an amplified bass as well. By the 1960’s, the double bass had been relegated to jazz and orchestras.

Today there are literally hundreds of different electric bass guitars. Some are designed to produce round, full sound; while others are meant to be used for slap techniques. In addition, there are also bass guitars that use five or even six strings, as opposed to the traditional four.
