Balalaika

The Balalaika is a three string musical instrument with a long history and roots that run deep in the culture and traditions of Russia. The balalaika is considered an ethnic (or folk) musical instrument, and it was originally very popular among Russian peasants. Its greatest popularity took place during the early 18th century, when many ballads were composed for the balalaika which made light of Russian political and religious authority. As a result, the balalaika was at times banned by both the State as well as the Russian Orthodox Church.

The balalaika likely evolved over the centuries from an Oriental instrument known as the Dombra. During the latter part of the 19th century, the instrument underwent several important changes – most significantly, the adoption of its now classic triangular shape. The traditional balalaika has a narrow neck with metal frets (like a guitar). It creates a beautiful sound, with warm, rich tones.
